Profiles

Profiles are a great way to expand your personal network, foster teamwork and build relationships that span boundaries such as location, department and job functions. Elgg's Profile feature can be extended or tailored to suit your audience, enabling users or communities to establish new contacts or identify key people who have specific knowledge or strategic business relationships, both internally and externally.
Activity

Activity Streams enable you to easily keep on top of what's going on across your site, with real time updates from your connections, groups or channels.
Conversations

Elgg enables you to hold microblogging-style conversations with your colleagues, or simply publish concise, targeted messages to your audience. If you're a Twitter user, you can keep your followers up to date by automatically updating Twitter whenever you post, or pull in your tweets to share with users inside your own social hub.

The Groups feature provides a great way for people who share a common interest to collaborate by exchanging and sharing information and documents with one another. It enables users to easily set up public or private groups and get working together around specific topics or interests.

Create dedicated private or public communities for specific niche areas, so you can share information and communicate in a controlled environment. If you're a business, you can create public or private communities for specific projects or for collaboration with external users such as clients, suppliers or business partners. If you're an educational establishment, you can extend your campus network to promote communication and collaboration with third parties, for example to facilitate a joint research project with other schools or universities, or to build an interactive alumni portal.

Your network comes with an intuitive Administration Panel, which gives you control over the features available to users as well as the overall look and feel of the site. You also retain full control over who gets to access the site as well as view the content.

Indeed, by doing so, you may be entrusting data, relationships and marketing effort to a third party with no guarantee of service continuity. With Elgg, you retain full ownership of your data and content. You can even export your data at any time if you want to take a back up or decide to migrate your network to your own servers.
